Cloud Migration for a Fast-Growing Digital-Health Startup
We moved a fast-scaling digital-health startup off strained on-prem infrastructure onto a secure, HIPAA-aligned AWS landing zone, modernizing progressively alongside the live product so clinicians gained real-time, reliable access to critical patient data.

Results at a glance
The situation
A fast-growing digital-health organization was operating across multiple regions with a rapidly expanding patient base and rising data volumes. Their on-premise systems buckled during traffic spikes, causing slowdowns and delayed access to critical health information right when clinicians needed it most. Hardware refreshes, licensing renewals, and manual maintenance kept driving up total cost of ownership, while legacy constraints made it hard to enforce security policies or ship new digital-health features quickly. Leadership wanted a cloud-first strategy that would unlock innovation and improve patient-care delivery.
Design and execute a phased migration to a secure, compliance-ready cloud foundation without disrupting the live product or patient services. The platform had to scale elastically through patient-load peaks, reduce infrastructure cost and maintenance burden, and let the team modernize incrementally while continuing to ship.
How we delivered
Establish a secure, HIPAA-aligned landing zone
We stood up an AWS foundation with segmented networking, encryption, and centralized identity and audit controls, giving the startup a compliant baseline to migrate onto and build on safely.
Migrate patient and transactional data to managed databases
We moved patient records and transactional systems onto Amazon RDS with automated backups and Multi-AZ deployment, improving durability and removing manual database maintenance from the team's plate.
Centralize connectivity through a managed API layer
We introduced Amazon API Gateway to standardize internal and third-party integrations, so new digital-health apps and partner systems could connect through one governed, secured entry point.
Modernize storage and content delivery for low latency
We placed clinical and diagnostic assets in Amazon S3 with lifecycle policies for cost-efficient retention, and served content through Amazon CloudFront to cut latency in EHR and diagnostic workflows.
Unify authentication with single sign-on
We implemented Amazon Cognito to provide SSO across the product suite, simplifying access for clinicians while tightening identity governance across applications.
Modernize progressively alongside the live product
We migrated in phases behind the running application, validating each service before cutover so the startup kept shipping features while the foundation was replaced underneath them.
The technical solution
A block-level view of the system we designed and delivered — data and control flowing across each stage.
What the users see
A wireframe of the experience we shipped — laid out for the people who use it every day.
Modernize the core without the big-bang risk
A 'sidecar' approach wraps your legacy core with APIs and stands up new cloud-native services alongside it — so you migrate progressively, not all at once.
A cloud foundation built to scale and stay secure
From edge to data tier, we design layered, observable architectures with security and compliance engineered in — deployable to AWS, Azure, or GCP as single-cloud, multi-cloud, or hybrid.
Outcomes delivered
- The platform now scales elastically through patient-load peaks, handling volume spikes without the downtime and delays that plagued the on-prem setup.
- Application response times improved and clinicians gained faster, more reliable access to critical health information across regions.
- Retiring on-prem hardware, licensing, and manual maintenance lowered total cost of ownership and freed the IT team to focus on strategic, product-led initiatives.
- The HIPAA-aligned landing zone strengthened the startup's security posture and made regulatory compliance easier to demonstrate and sustain.
- Managed services and automation shortened the path from code to production, letting the team ship new digital-health capabilities faster and more safely.
